She pulled the note down and sniffed it. Imagining she could smell his earthy scent on the paper. Now she realized she was falling harder and faster than expected. She needed to slow that descent, or she was going to crash land and break everything in her body, heart and soul included.
Control, that was the key. It was her idea for this whole thing, so she would have to be the one to manage her feelings. Doing that would be downright impossible while they were sleeping together; she knew that for a fact. But if this weekend was all she had, she planned to savor every single second of it. Her broken heart could wait until Tuesday.
It was a little chilly this time of year, especially on the water. So, she changed into sweats and a hoodie before heading down to the lake. As she closed the door behind her, she turned to study the chipped paint and the dated architecture.
This weekend was to say goodbye to her childhood retreat and hello to a perfect new arrangement with Josh. Instead, there would be no hellos, only goodbyes. She feared their friendship had already suffered irreparable damage because of her. Even if Josh stayed in her life as her friend, things would never be the same. Of course, she couldnât do the sleeping together thing now either so, yep, only goodbyes.
Cait laid her hand against the cool wood and closed her eyes. She let the past wash over her. So much good had happened in that cabin but her parents tossed it all away. And what they didnât manage to fuck up in her memories attached to the place, she just did. This would now be the place where her and Joshâs friendship started to die.
Dropping her hand with a sigh, she jogged toward the lake. When she arrived, it looked like Josh had planned everything. He had the poles in the water propped up into the tenders and a picnic laid out. He was lounging casually on the well-worn checkered blanket and sipping a glass of wine.
Hesitating at the tree line she studied him. His strong jaw and lean body looked at home in the outdoors. His brown, devil-may-care hair blew gently in the breeze. God, she was going to miss crying on those broad shoulders when shit got rough. His words of comfort and wisdom would be a thing of the past. Next time she decided to tie one on either Paula would need to hold her hair or, well . . . those were her problems now, not his.
That list was scrolling through her head and brought realization crashing down upon her. Sheâd relied on Josh for emotional support to the extreme. The way someone relied on their significant other. It wasnât that sheâd intended to make him her rockâsomehow, he had taken on that role and never complained. Iâm just the bitch who took advantage of it.
He was such a good man and sheâd not treated him as well as heâd treated her through the years.
